Introduction / History

The Panna are a Tamil-speaking community traditionally associated with occupations such as agricultural labor and service roles within the historical caste system. Their name is linked to tasks that supported rural life, often considered low-status in traditional society. Over time, social reforms and modernization have reduced caste-based restrictions, but economic challenges and cultural identity issues remain significant for this group.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Panna families often live in rural villages or small towns, working as laborers, farmers, or in low-income jobs. Some continue traditional roles, while younger generations seek opportunities in urban areas. Family life is close-knit, and community ties are strong, with mutual support during festivals and hardships.

Celebrations include Tamil cultural events and Hindu festivals such as Pongal, marked by cooking sweet rice and honoring cattle. Meals typically feature rice, lentils, vegetables, and fish, flavored with local spices. Education is increasingly valued, though access to quality schooling can be limited in rural areas.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Panna people primarily follow Hinduism, worshiping deities such as Shiva, Murugan, and village guardian gods. Temples and shrines play a central role in their spiritual life, and rituals often include offerings, prayers, and participation in annual temple festivals. Astrology and folk traditions influence decisions about marriage and other life events. While Hinduism shapes their worldview, cultural practices and ancestral customs remain deeply woven into their daily lives.

What Are Their Needs?

The Panna face economic vulnerability, limited access to healthcare, and educational challenges. Social discrimination can persist, making upward mobility difficult. Spiritually, most have never heard a clear presentation of the gospel, but there are some believers among them who can share Christ's salvation in culturally relevant ways. There is a need for holistic outreach that addresses both physical and spiritual needs, empowering them to experience hope and dignity.

Prayer Items

Pray for the Panna people to encounter the love, truth, and salvation of Jesus Christ.
Ask God to raise up workers who can share the gospel in ways that honor their culture and language.
Pray for improved access to education and healthcare, especially in rural areas.
Intercede for any Panna believers to grow strong in faith and become part of the mission force reaching others in Sri Lanka and India.
